About

I was born in Texas, grew up in New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire, and have lived in Virginia, California and now Manhattan (for the last 20-plus years). My childhood home was full of books; both my parents were great readers, and my father was in the publishing business. I’ve written all my life: poetry, fiction, memoir, essays. I’ve published two novels: Men, (Soho Press), Me And You, (Soho Press) and a memoir The Boy on the Green Bicycle, (Soho Press). Men and Me and You were translated into German, Spanish and Dutch. Men was made into the film of the same name starring Karen Black. I’ve won a National Endowment for The Arts grant and a New York State Council for the Arts grant. My recently published poetry chapbook is it all stayed open (Red Glass Press). I’ve written book reviews and articles for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, New York Woman and other publications. I’ve worked as a writer/editor for the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, and  as a writer/editor for the Cathedral of St. John The Divine in New York City, with particular attention to the Cathedral American Poets Corner. My private clients have included novelists, psychologists, doctors and businesspeople needing help with professional writing.
