I charge $60 an hour, with discounts available for long projects and customers with budgetary constraints. I offer a free sample editing/critique of 1500 words: this only applies to full-length manuscripts. To see samples of my article writing, please click read Cathedral newsletter online. I edit the newsletter of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, in New York City, and write all unsigned articles. I have also written a few articles for The New York Times, one of which can be found here http://www.nytimes.com/books/99/12/12/bookend.
For manuscript assessment and editorial suggestions I charge by the job depending on the length of the manuscript (number of words) and how much analysis you want. For a simple copy edit and proofread I charge $2.50 per page (a page=300 words). For a thorough critique with a 10-20 page editorial letter as well as notes on the manuscript and a phone or email consultation, the cost depends on how much editing you want and need, whether you want copy editing as well as story editing, and length. The fee can run anywhere from a few hundred for a short manuscript that only needs light editing to $2000 for a several-hundred-page novel with serious problems. It can be difficult to know exactly what you want, so I am happy to discuss the editing process, fees and your budget, on the phone or by email.
For article/brochure writing and editing, and for copy and line editing of manuscripts, I bill by the hour, and I will give you an estimate beforehand.
Most short pieces—short stories, articles, ads, book reviews, reportss—can be edited/polished for between $60-$150, depending on length and how much rewriting is needed.
